Antônio Batista Macêdo, also known as Txai, was born in 1952 in Acre. He was a rubber tapper before serving in the Brazilian Army. He later became an indigenist and sertanista, contributing to the demarcation of indigenous lands and the creation of extractive reserves in the region. He participated intensely in the struggle of indigenous peoples and traditional populations, such as rubber tappers. As a result, these peoples freed themselves from their former bosses, the “rubber lords”, and marked a new phase in their history.
