When he became mayor of Paragominas, in Pará, Adnan was faced with an uncomfortable record. The city was the one that had destroyed the most forest in the Amazon to make room for cattle and soy. This bad reputation was paying off: not only was the devastation affecting public health and quality of life, but Paragominas was also threatened with losing export markets for its agricultural products due to sanctions from European countries. Faced with this, Adnan led a city-wide mobilization to create the internationally recognized Paragominas Green Municipality project and proved that preserving the biome is not incompatible with prosperity.
