Alessandra Munduruku

Leadership of the Munduruku people

Winner of the Goldman Prize, the “Nobel Prize for the Environment”, Alessandra Korap Munduruku is one of Brazil’s main indigenous leaders. Born in Itaituba (PA), in the Middle Tapajós, she joined the indigenous struggle when her territory came under threat from large energy and mining projects.
The Munduruku face successive invasions by land grabbers, miners and loggers, as well as the contamination of rivers by mercury and the constant threat to the rights of indigenous peoples, such as the Temporal Framework Law. Her mobilization was fundamental in ensuring that, in 2024, the Sawré Muybu Indigenous Land was finally demarcated – a historic achievement. Also recognized with the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, Alessandra is a symbol of the resistance of indigenous women and the defence of traditional territories.
